Faculty Member, English Literature
Reader in Victorian Studies
About
I currently work at the University of Hertfordshire. Before coming to Hertfordshire in 1999 I worked at the University of Exeter and the University of Derby.
My main research interests lie in the field of Victorian studies and include sensation fiction and drama, as well as individual authors such as Bram Stoker, Anthony Trollope, Wilkie Collins and Ellen (Mrs Henry) Wood. I also edit the journal `Critical Survey'.
Though I work mainly on nineteenth century writing I'm currently doing something at bit different (for me anyhow) and am working on World War I fiction and drama. It is quite exciting, doing new stuff and I'm spending a lot of time reading war-time issues of magazines like The Bystander, The Sketch, Tatler and The English Review, as well as a lot of war-time plays.

I'm also working on a chapter on sensation drama and a paper on adaptations of Dickens novels.
